October First Saturday Seminar

Start off spooky season with us as we learn about something lurking in our local waterways. Algae are foundational building blocks of aquatic ecosystems which offer an array of benefits. Yet, Harmful Algal Blooms (or HABs)—episodes of unregulated algal growth—can have significant ecological, economic, and human health consequences through biomass accumulation and the production of toxic compounds.

Researchers, including Dr. Brittany Zepernick, have spent decades working to understand why certain algae bloom and what environmental factors fuel their growth and toxicity. Dr. Zepernick will share what we’ve discovered and explore and the good and bad of blooms in the Cape Fear River Basin, and across the globe.

Be sure to arrive early to secure a seat and enjoy free coffee and pancakes courtesy of our fall interns!
