Join Wetlands Watch\, the North Carolina Coastal Federation (NCCF)\, and Plastic Ocean Project (POP) to learn all about the multidisciplinary partnership of the tidal flood monitoring program Catch the King and opportunities to participate in mapping\, data collection\, and Trees4Trash™ beach cleanup events. Wetlands Watch will share outcomes and aspirations of their NOAA-funded expansion pilot of Catch the King (originally a Virginia-based program) in North Carolina. Coordinators and volunteers of NCCF and POP will share how Catch the King aligns with their coastal research and volunteer programming.\n\nAbout the Speakers:Gabi Kinney (left photo) is a UNCW Marine Biology alum with deep passion for facilitating climate adaptation through community perspectives and values. In 2023\, Gabi received a master’s degree in Natural Resources\, specializing in Global Sustainability\, and has since become a Certified Floodplain Manager and Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional through her work at Wetlands Watch\, an environmental nonprofit based in Norfolk\, Virginia. As the Community Engagement Project Manager\, Gabi runs several multidisciplinary programs centered around place-based education and amplifying local responses to sea level rise adaptation and the impacts of climate-driven flooding\, which includes her coordination of the community science flood mapping program Catch the King.\n\nJess Elliot (middle photo) is a UNCW alum passionate about marine biology and environmental science. She grew up in Iowa along the Mississippi River\, where she saw firsthand the impact of plastic pollution on local environments. At UNCW\, she completed a thesis on terrapin physiology\, and began spending time in the Plastic Ocean Project lab studying microplastics found in locally stranded dolphins. After graduation she continued in the microplastics lab for a year before working as a biological assistant studying sea turtles and shorebirds at Cape Lookout National Seashore\, and has now returned to Wilmington to continue her work with the Plastic Ocean Project.\n\nWarren Darrell (right photo) is an environmental science instructor with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute\, and an active volunteer with the North Carolina Coastal Federation\, The Coastal Estuarine Research Reserve\, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He has master’s degrees in environmental engineering and environmental science.

A North Carolina native\, she attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington\, earning a MSc in Environmental Sciences.  She currently serves as the Vice Chairperson of Keep New Hanover Beautiful\, living in Wilmington with her husband\, Parker and kittens\, Fennel and Beans. \nDavid Ingram\nDavid Ingram is the Sustainability Manager for the City of Wilmington. David’s work includes guiding the City to achieve their clean energy\, GHG emission reduction\, and recycling & waste reduction goals. DESCRIPTION:Register Here \n \nCFRW’s June 2024 paddle! Join us as we explore the Cape Fear River Basin by boat! Our June paddle will be hosted by our dear friend Angela Caldwell Marshall\, founder and owner of Kayak Carolina. This month we will put in and take out at River Road Park for this out and back paddle. Meet at River Road Park at 8:00 am\, see below for instructions! \n\n\nIf bringing your own boats\, arrive at 8am or earlier and please unload at the ramp as quickly as you can. Keep the right-hand side clear for people that are currently launching and landing. When unloading\, please place your boat and gear to the far-left hand side of the ramp (when facing the water)\, anywhere there is space.  Alternatively\, you can put your boat a little farther up in the grass on the left behind the park sign where there is plenty of room to pack your boat and whatnot. \n\n\nEveryone please meet up once you’re ready\, on the right-hand side of the park in the wide-open grassy area\, your lead guide Angela and guides will be there to meet you.  Please stay clear of the boat ramp lane and the roundabout for trucks and trailers\, we can chill under the trees and gather there. \n\n\nFor restrooms\, they are up almost to the head of the road\, on the right-hand side as you turn into the park.  Please go ahead and get a parking space\, then walk up there as needed. \n\n\nAll paddlers should wear a PFD\, however those paddlers using CFRW boats are required to wear a PFD.  Other items to remember include sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses\, water\, snack/lunch and water shoes. Rother\nCo-authors: Kendra Devereux (MS) and Andrea Hawkes (PhD)\n🌿\nDescription: Ghost forests occur in the Cape Fear Region\, including along Smith Creek. These areas of dead bald cypress trees form from saltwater intrusion related to dredging and/or relative sea-level rise. We use a combination of tree-ring and foraminiferal records from sediments to learn more about ghost forest formation.\n🌿\nBio: Dr. Monica T. Rother is an Associate Professor in the Environmental Sciences Department at UNCW. Monica conducts research within the broad disciplines of forest ecology\, biogeography\, and dendrochronology (tree-ring science). She earned her PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2015 and previously worked as a fire ecologist at Tall Timbers Research Station in Tallahassee\, Florida. The master plan aims at identifying ways to improve the historic park to make it a safe\, well-maintained\, and memorable place within the community for generations to come. The final plan includes a landscape and maintenance plan to include opening up shoreline sight lines\, analysis to determine personnel needs\, programming analysis\, safety and security analysis\, and capital projects/facility life cycles. \nBio: Amy Beatty is the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Wilmington. Amy attended East Carolina University where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Community Health and Master of Arts in Public Health Education. After working as a health educator\, Amy transitioned to the field of parks and recreation when she accepted a position with the City of Wilmington. Amy has been employed with the City for 25 years\, serving in various roles. She currently oversees parks\, landscaping and right-of way maintenance\, urban forestry management\, cultural activities\, and recreation facilities operations and programming city-wide. SUMMARY:April 2024 Third Saturday Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Register for the paddle HERE \nKayaking route on Black River with marked put-in at Ivanhoe and take-out at Henry’s landing\, illustrated on a satellite map. This the route of the Third Saturday Paddle in April \n This Paddle will be a little longer than past paddles.  We’ll paddle about 9 miles of the upper reaches of the Black River from the WRC put-in near Ivanhoe\, NC to Henry’s Landing. **Henry’s Landing is a private landing and there is a $5 fee per boat to use the landing – you will need to bring $5 in cash on this trip\, exact change required.** This is a more advanced paddle and is not recommended for beginners.  There will be approximately 3.5 hours of paddling and some possible portages due to downed trees or blockages in the river.  In addition to a beautiful blackwater river\, expect snags\, strainers\, sandbars\, and low water. This is not the paddle for first time paddlers. \nPaddlers can meet at the Cape Fear River Watch headquarters and we will caravan to the put-in\, or you meet at the put-in location.  We will meet at CFRW headquarters at 7:30 am for an 8:00 am departure. Those meeting us at the put in should be there by 8:30am.  \nPut-in: WRC Ramp at Ivanhoe \nTake-out: Henry’s Landing \nAll paddlers should wear a PFD\, however those paddlers using CFRW boats are required to wear a PFD.  Other items to remember include sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses\, water\, snack/lunch and water shoes. If you have an allergy that is severe remember to bring your epi-pen or medication. Pancakes at 8am and Seminar at 9am. \nTitle: Long-term Studies of Longleaf Pines\, Venus Flytraps and More in a Fire-Dependent Ecosystem in the Green Swamp of Brunswick County \nDescription: The Green Swamp is a national landmark. It contains some of the best examples of wet-pine savannas in the world. It has a rich biodiversity and is an important part of the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain 36th Global Biodiversity Hotspot. Long-term studies of Longleaf Pines\, Venus Flytraps\, and Lysimachia asperulifolia (an endangered species) are described along with the importance of fire (frequency and timing) to these and other species in this fire-dependent ecosystem. Results from over a decade of investigations with the Nature Conservancy will be highlighted along with comments and post-fire images from the large wildfire in June 2023. \nSpeaker: Roger Shew\nRoger is a Geology and Environmental Science professor at UNCW and has been teaching since 1999. He is particularly interested in energy and water resources\, coastal plain ecosystems\, and other sustainability issues; among other courses he teaches courses in sustainability. Roger also conducts field seminars as part of UNCW outreach as well as Teacher Education workshops including trips to coastal area beaches and barrier islands\, the Green Swamp Preserve\, and to the Bay Lakes areas. He volunteers with the Coastal Federation and with the Nature Conservancy where he helps with longleaf pine restoration and with endangered species studies. DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, February 3rd for our February first Saturday seminar! Pancakes at 8am and seminar at 9am. \nTitle: Audubon North Carolina on the Cape Fear River \nDescription: This month’s seminar will review how birds use the Cape Fear River year-round as well as highlight research and monitoring by Audubon NC and their partners. \nSpeaker:\nLindsay Addison\, Coastal Biologist\, Audubon North Carolina\nLindsay Addison has been Audubon NC’s coastal biologist since 2011. In this role\, Lindsay\, and the staff members she supervises\, manages and monitors about 40% of the waterbirds that nest on North Carolina’s coast. She serves on the American Oystercatcher Working Group’s Steering Committee\, coordinates North Carolina’s statewide oystercatcher banding program\, and collaborates with academic and agency partners around the state on science and monitoring projects. Lindsay earned her undergraduate degree at Stetson University and her M.S. at Florida Gulf Coast University\, where she studied Least Terns nesting on natural beaches and rooftops. She has worked in birds and conservation since 2005\, in Florida\, Massachusetts\, and California\, and is grateful to have been born and raised in southwest Florida.

Pancakes at 8am and seminar at 9am. https://fb.me/e/1qA7Sdho9 \nTitle: Habitat and environmental monitoring in the lower Cape Fear Coastal Reserve sites. \n\n\n\nDescription: Byron Toothman and Elizabeth Pinnix discuss the NC Coastal Reserve System Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) and challenges in managing our sites along the Lower Cape Fear area. We’ll cover environmental and habitat monitoring as well as species of concern and some of the current issues in land management at our sites. \nSpeakers: Elizabeth Pinnix\, Southern Sites Manager for the NC Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve\nIn her role\, Elizabeth spends most of her time protecting coastal ecosystems and studying them. As a child she always knew she wanted to work in marine science\, especially with sea turtles. She attended UNC-Wilmington and received her bachelors in Oceanography\, then went on to get her master’s in marine biology from Nova Southeastern University in South Florida. She is passionate about coastal NC and teaching others about our amazing coastal ecosystems. \nByron Toothman\, Research Biologist for the NC Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve\nAfter moving to Coastal NC from Washington DC\, Byron spent his childhood in Morehead City and on the waters of Bogue Sound. There he grew attached to all the trappings of life on the water in Coastal North Carolina. He attended UNC Wilmington where he earned a B.S. in Marine Biology and Environmental Science. After a time working in aquaculture\, he returned to pursue a M.S. in Marine Science and is now finishing a PhD in Marine Biology. Byron has 20+ years of experience with water quality in coastal and estuarine environments. He has been a Research Biologist with the NC Coastal Reserve for 15 years where he manages their environmental monitoring programs. He also has experience in grant writing\, teaching\, outreach\, and student mentoring to further stewardship and understanding of the coastal landscape. The presentation will be part history lesson and part engineering lesson\, with a healthy dose of public policy conversation.\n\n\n\nBio: Kenneth Waldroup is Executive Director of Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA)\, the primary drinking water and wastewater provider in Wilmington and New Hanover County. Ken has more than 30 years of experience in the water industry\, is a licensed professional engineer\, and holds a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from N.C. State University and a master’s in public administration from N.C. Central University. He is a former member of the N.C. Environmental Management Commission and has volunteered in water sector trade and professional organizations for most of his career. Ken and his wife Evelyn live in downtown Wilmington\, where they enjoy sharing the vibrant food\, entertainment\, cultural offerings with their two adult daughters and visiting family and friends.

SUMMARY:November Friendsgiving Paddle and Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nAs we approach the end of our 3rd Saturday paddling series which runs from March through November we wanted to revive our end of the season oyster roast and potluck. This is a great chance for paddlers to get together and share a meal and some stories about your most (or least?) favorite paddle of the year. Just pick a dish using the sign-up genius link\, pack any perishable food in a cooler which will stay in your car while we paddle and when we get to the takeout we’ll retrieve our contributions to the potluck and enjoy! CFRW will provide steamed oysters as long as they last! \nOur November paddle will begin on the Brunswick River at the new Belville Park kayak launch. We’ll paddle across the Brunswick and into Alligator Creek\, along Alligator Creek\, under the Hwy 74/76 bridge (the tide will be low) and then back out into the Brunswick River\, continue upstream to the Cape Fear and then left into Davis Creek. We’ll take out at Davis Creek Park and have our Friendsgiving there. \nThe November paddle and Friendsgiving is very weather dependent. If it’s too cold\, it’s no fun and potentially dangerous to paddle. It’s also no fun to share a meal outside in those conditions. She holds a B.A. in Biology and Environmental Science from the University of Virginia\, an M.S. in Marine Science from the College of William and Mary\, and a Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of South Alabama. Beth has lived in Wilmington since 2014\, taught classes and led research projects in UNCW’s Department of Biology and Marine Biology\, and has worked at the Bald Head Island Conservancy leading science and conservation programs since summer 2018. Her research specialty is estuarine and shellfish ecology and stakeholder-driven science. DESCRIPTION:Join us as our own CFRW Outreach & Engagement Manager\, Seanna Jobe\, discusses her master’s research she conducted at UNCW! \nPancakes at 8 am\, seminar will start at 9 am!  \n Title: Bald Head Island Coyotes: How Predator Exclusion Cages\, Which Protect Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nests\, Act as a Visual Stimuli \nDescription: Loggerhead Sea Turtles are a species that are threatened on the IUCN red list and face many challenges such as; predation\, coastal development\, climate change\, nesting obstructions\, pollution\, inundation by overwash\, and poaching. On Bald Head Island\, intense predation by coyotes became a very real threat in 2019 when over 100 hatchlings and 2\,000 eggs were lost. After a research project on best predatory exclusion cage design was conducted\, Seanna researched how these devices act as a visual attractant to coyotes on the island\, and what that meant for sea turtle management in the future! \nSpeaker: Seanna Jobe\, CFRW Outreach & Engagement Manager\nSeanna grew up in Western New York and moved to Wilmington for graduate school in 2020. She received her bachelor’s in environmental biology from Houghton University\, and her master’s in environmental studies from UNCW. While getting her masters\, she did her research capstone on Predator Exclusion Cages as Visual Attractants to Canis latrans. This research was conducted on Bald Head Island\, North Carolina\, where she was able to collaborate with Bald Head Island Conservancy. Seanna has been fortunate to have many formative experiences with wildlife which have directly influenced her passions for management and conservation\, and science communication!  \nWon’t be able to make it? SUMMARY:July 2023 Paddle: Sawpit Landing (Northeast Cape Fear River)
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nJoin the CFRW paddlers as we explore the Northeast Cape Fear River between Sawpit Landing (off White Stocking Road) and the Shaw Highway Wildlife ramp. This is a great section of river with a textbook example of an oxbow lake\, several nice coves\, and a few creeks to poke our heads into. We will be departing from River Road Park. You can either meet us at the CFRW office at 7:30 for a caravan to River Rd Park\, or you can meet us there at 8:15am. \nWe encourage all paddlers to wear a PFD\, and we require all paddlers using CFRW boats to wear one.  Other items to remember include sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses\, water\, snack and water shoes if you would like to explore the beaches where oyster shells are present. \n*Strong wind and foul weather can effect this paddle more than others due to its location.  We will be monitoring the forecast and if predictions indicate that their will be strong winds we will likely cancel this paddle. The cleanup will take place in an area that flows into Greenfield Lake! We will be focusing our efforts on the railroad tracks that run behind the Good Shepherd Center. There is a strong possibility that the cleanup will intersect with our local unhoused community.The cleanup will take place from 9:00am-11:00am. We will be meeting at the intersection of 8th and Martin. An address that will get you close is 811 Martin St. Please do not park in the Good Shepherd parking lot. Wilmington\, NC 28401. SUMMARY:April 2023 Paddle - Ivanhoe *Requires experience (Black River)
DESCRIPTION:This Paddle will be a little longer than past paddles.  We’ll paddle about 7 1/2 miles of the upper reaches of the Black River from the WRC put-in near Ivanhoe\, NC to Beatty’s Bridge.  This is a more advanced paddle and is not recommended for beginners.  There will be approximately 3 hours of paddling and some possible portages due to downed trees or blockages in the river.  In addition to a beautiful blackwater river\, expect snags\, strainers\, low water\, parking that is not ideal\, and a big hill at the takeout – this is not the paddle for first time paddlers. \nPaddlers can meet at the Cape Fear River Watch headquarters where we will meet to caravan\, or meet up with the caravan at the put in location.  We will meet at CFRW headquarters at 7:30 am for an 8:00am departure. Those meeting us at the put in should be there by 8:30am. Click HERE for a map to the put in location! You can enter your address into “Box A” to get specific directions from your location to the put in! \nAll paddlers should wear a PFD\, however those paddlers using CFRW boats are required to wear a PFD.  Other items to remember include sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses\, water\, snack and water shoes if you would like to explore the beaches where oyster shells are present. SUMMARY:1st Saturday Seminar - Cooking the GOOS: Salinity\, sea level rise and the oceans
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Frederick Bingham\, professor in the Department of Physics & Physical Oceanography and Center for Marine Science at UNCW \nTopic: Salinity\, sea level rise and the oceans. Join us as Dr. Frederick Bingham will be talking about some of the ways that the ocean is observed\, including in situ (wet) instruments\, tide gauges and satellites relating them to how we observe and understand sea level rise. He will also talk about salinity\, how it is defined and measured\, how it is changing globally and how it is being monitored (or really not) in the Cape Fear River. \nBio: Dr. Frederick Bingham has been a professor in the Department of Physics & Physical Oceanography and Center for Marine Science at UNCW for almost 30 years (29). He has a PhD in Oceanography from the University of California San Diego\, and a Masters degree in Computer Science and Information Systems from UNCW. He has held previous positions at Tohoku University in Sendai\, Japan and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Fred has spent his career studying the circulation of the oceans at large scales\, their interaction with the atmosphere\, their role in the climate\, and the importance of ocean salinity in all of that. He has over 50 published papers in the field and his research has been funded by NASA as a member of their Ocean Salinity Science Team since 2009. \n8:00 am – Doors open for coffee and pancakes\n9:00 am – Seminar begins \nNote: Pre-registration not required.
