DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJoin us as we continue to explore the Cape Fear River by boat! This month we will put in it Archie Blue Park and take out near downtown at Dram Tree Park. This is a really fun paddle that doesn’t take us far from town. SUMMARY:April 2023 Paddle - Ivanhoe *Requires experience (Black River)
DESCRIPTION:This Paddle will be a little longer than past paddles.  We’ll paddle about 7 1/2 miles of the upper reaches of the Black River from the WRC put-in near Ivanhoe\, NC to Beatty’s Bridge.  This is a more advanced paddle and is not recommended for beginners.  There will be approximately 3 hours of paddling and some possible portages due to downed trees or blockages in the river.  In addition to a beautiful blackwater river\, expect snags\, strainers\, low water\, parking that is not ideal\, and a big hill at the takeout – this is not the paddle for first time paddlers. \nPaddlers can meet at the Cape Fear River Watch headquarters where we will meet to caravan\, or meet up with the caravan at the put in location.  We will meet at CFRW headquarters at 7:30 am for an 8:00am departure. Those meeting us at the put in should be there by 8:30am. Click HERE for a map to the put in location! You can enter your address into “Box A” to get specific directions from your location to the put in! \nAll paddlers should wear a PFD\, however those paddlers using CFRW boats are required to wear a PFD.  Other items to remember include sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses\, water\, snack and water shoes if you would like to explore the beaches where oyster shells are present. SUMMARY:1st Saturday Seminar - Cooking the GOOS: Salinity\, sea level rise and the oceans
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Frederick Bingham\, professor in the Department of Physics & Physical Oceanography and Center for Marine Science at UNCW \nTopic: Salinity\, sea level rise and the oceans. Join us as Dr. Frederick Bingham will be talking about some of the ways that the ocean is observed\, including in situ (wet) instruments\, tide gauges and satellites relating them to how we observe and understand sea level rise. He will also talk about salinity\, how it is defined and measured\, how it is changing globally and how it is being monitored (or really not) in the Cape Fear River. \nBio: Dr. Frederick Bingham has been a professor in the Department of Physics & Physical Oceanography and Center for Marine Science at UNCW for almost 30 years (29). He has a PhD in Oceanography from the University of California San Diego\, and a Masters degree in Computer Science and Information Systems from UNCW. He has held previous positions at Tohoku University in Sendai\, Japan and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Fred has spent his career studying the circulation of the oceans at large scales\, their interaction with the atmosphere\, their role in the climate\, and the importance of ocean salinity in all of that. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Amy Renfranz \nTopic: From Mountains to Sea: An Adventure in Plant Communities \nJoin naturalist Amy Renfranz as she makes parallels between the plant communities on the coast and in the mountains of North Carolina. Her talk will leave you with a bucket list of places to visit and a few ideas for ways to incorporate natural ecology into your own backyard! \nAbout the speaker: Amy Renfranz lives for exploring and investigating the world around her – and sharing those experiences with others. \nAmy began in environmental education on the Blue Ridge Parkway in 2008. In 2011\, she was awarded the National Park Service at the Blue Ridge Parkway’s “Ranger of the Year” award for her work in creating new programming for youth and adults. She is a NC Certified Environmental Educator and a Certified Naturalist through the Yellowstone Institute. She has also worked at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation\, Lees-McRae College\, the Yellowstone Association Institute\, and New Hanover Soil & Water Conservation District. For nearly ten years\, she wrote an award-winning\, weekly newspaper column called “Dear Naturalist.” In 2022\, she began pursuing a full-time career in native plant landscaping. \nAmy is a graduate of Appalachian State University and North Carolina State University\, where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Parks\, Recreation\, and Tourism Management. She currently serves on the board of Keep New Hanover Beautiful and the Environmental Educators of North Carolina. She volunteers as a Creek Watcher for Cape Fear River Watch\, and facilitates litter cleanups in her neighborhood. \nNote: Pre-registration not required. In-person only. After receiving an M.S. in Coastal and Ocean Policy in 2016 from UNC-Wilmington\, she moved to Richmond\, Virginia and worked for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality in a water quality policy role for several years. SUMMARY:Third Saturday Paddle: Northeast Cape Fear River
DESCRIPTION:Join the CFRW paddlers as we explore the Northeast Cape Fear River between Sawpit Landing (off White Stocking Road) and the Shaw Highway Wildlife ramp. This is a great section of river with a textbook example of an oxbow lake\, several nice coves\, and a few creeks to poke our heads into. DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join us for our May First Saturday Seminar\, which will be our first IN PERSON seminar since the beginning of COVID! We can’t wait to share coffee and pancakes with you at our office. CFRW staff members Rob Clark and Audrey Dunn will be discussing the growing plastics crisis\, including plastic’s dire environmental impacts from production to disposal (or lack thereof) as well as CFRW’s work to combat plastic pollution in our area. Erin has been a Wilmington resident since 1995 when\, after a childhood in Vermont peppered with vacations to the NC coast\, she moved from New England to be near the ocean she loved. Erin has a BS in Environmental Science and an MS in Marine Science from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington\, and 20 years experience in all aspects of environmental work. When she’s not hugging trees or attending public meetings Erin enjoys sitting on the beach\, surfing\, reading\, and riding her bike.

DESCRIPTION:Well\, its that time of year again-temperatures are dropping\, the days are getting shorter and its time to wrap up the CFRW Paddle Series for the year with one last trip. Following tradition\, after the paddle we will celebrate with an oyster roast and potluck. Paddlers and non-paddlers are invited to attend the celebration. Please bring a potluck dish to share\, and something to serve it with. \nNovember’s paddle route is TBA – a surprise if you will. \nPaddlers can meet at the CFRW office (617 Surry Street\, Wilmington) at 8:30 to caravan to the put-in.

She is advisor to her school’s environmental club and coaches their National Ocean Science Bowl team. Outside of school\, Keni serves on the executive board for the Surfrider Foundation\, where she advocates for ocean and environmental protection. When Keni is not working\, she enjoys time on the boat and at the beach with her husband and two children.\nKeni holds a Masters of Environmental Management degree from Duke University and a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of North Carolina – Wilmington\n\n\n\n
