DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 5th\, 617 Surry St. (the CFRW office). There will be free pancakes and coffee starting at 8am followed by the seminar at 9am.\n\nTitle: Comprehensive Planning and the Wilmington Community\n\nDescription: The City of Wilmington’s Planning and Development Department will discuss the ways residents shape planning initiatives and their impact on local development and infrastructure. The community is a key stakeholder in determining ideals and goals for the future of growth and development in Wilmington. Planning initiatives such as the Wilmington Greater Downtown Plan (WGDP) have focused heavily on community needs and concerns to drive program and policy recommendations. These recommendations impact development regulations and program opportunities that can make a difference in the everyday lives of residents. This presentation will draw the lines between each step and highlight where residents can get involved.\n\nSpeaker bios: Travis Henley\, AICP\, CFM serves as Comprehensive Planning and Urban Design Manager for the City of Wilmington. Throughout his career\, he has been committed to ensuring that broad recommendations developed from community engagement and planning processes are translated into direct\, measurable action. Travis holds degrees in Political Science and Public Policy from James Madison University and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina Wilmington\, and is also currently serving as an Adjunct Professor at UNCW\, teaching a Land Use Planning course in the MPA Program.\n\nHillary Taylor is a Long-Range Planner on the Comprehensive Planning and Urban Design team at the City of Wilmington. With prior work experience in the urban policy\, climate change\, and international development nexus\, she is passionate about ensuring a sustainable and inclusive urban future for generations to come. She is proud to be a part of a City\, a team and a community that shares her values and vision.\n\nHaley Hopkins is a Long-Range Planner I on the Comprehensive Planning and Urban Design team at the City of Wilmington. With prior work in climate action research and comprehensive plan development\, she is excited to contribute to community-driven\, sustainable community development in Wilmington. Haley holds a degree in Sustainability Science from Furman University and certificates in qualitative research.

DESCRIPTION:Register here!!! \n \nFriday\, April 11th 10 to 11 a.m. \nCape Fear River Watch was awarded a three-year Environmental Enhancement Grant from the State’s office of the attorney general to help improve water quality\, reduce litter\, and engage the community in the Burnt Mill Creek Watershed. To learn more about Burnt Mill Creek and this ongoing project\, join us for a leisurely\, one-hour walking tour along Burnt Mill Creek!\n\nBurnt Mill Creek is an urban waterway in the heart of Wilmington. During the walk\, as we search for wildlife\, you will learn about the ecosystem\, environmental issues\, and ongoing restoration work in Burnt Mill Creek. Burnt Mill Creek harbors a surprising amount of wildlife\, including turtles\, birds\, crabs\, fish\, and more.\n\nThis tour is free and open to all ages. Donations will be accepted. Please consider bringing: sun protection (hat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses)\, water\, and comfortable walking shoes.\n\nPlease meet at the parking lot located at 2101 Market St. Wilmington\, NC 28401 (next to Port City Java and Bridge Church).

DESCRIPTION:Register Here!! \n \nALL VOLUNTEERS NOW MUST READ AND SIGN THE CFRW VOLUNTEER CODE OF CONDUCT VIA THIS GOOGLE FORM BEFORE PARTICIPATING IN A CLEANUP. \nCape Fear River Watch is excited to partner with Keep New Hanover Beautiful for our Second Saturday Cleanup on April 12th! The cleanup will take place in the Burnt Mill Creek Watershed. The cleanup will take place from 9am-11am. Parking can be found along Metting Rd. across from the retention pond in the Avalon Apartments complex (see picture below). An address that will get you close is 329-321 Bors Run\, Wilmington\, NC 28403. Just look for the “Cleanup In Progress” signs! There will be a couple of spots where waterproof boots or waders are needed. If you have some please bring them with you! We will provide pickers\, bags\, gloves and safety vests. As always remember to dress appropriately and bring water. We hope to see you out there!

SUMMARY:April Third Saturday Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Register here!! \n  \nJoin us as we explore the Cape Fear River Basin by boat at our first paddle of 2025! This month we will do a 4-5 mile paddle on the Black River. Put in at Hunt’s Bluff and take out at Point Caswell on Estate Rd. Meet at the Put in at Hunt’s Bluff no later than 8:30 am. \nWe encourage all paddlers to wear a PFD\, and we require all paddlers using CFRW boats to wear one. Other items to remember include sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses\, water\, and snacks. \nWe have a limited number of boats available for rent for CFRW members ($25 per boat; includes PFD and paddle). If you would like to rent a boat please indicate such during your registration. If you would like to join or renew before the paddle\, you can click here to join or renew or call our office at 910-762-5606. \nTo help CFRW continue to bring you great programs like our paddle series\, water quality programs and educational seminars\, we ask you make a $10 donation either online with your registration or by bringing cash or check to the paddle on Saturday.
