SUMMARY:CFRW Used Boat Sale at Waterline
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, March 26th at Waterline Brewing for an opportunity to listen to live music\, drink some great local brew\, purchase CFRW swag\, renew your membership\, enjoy some food from the Chrome Gnome food truck\, and peruse our used kayaks and canoes! We will be selling about 10-15 of our small\, used boats priced at $100-400 apiece. \nWe also invite members of the community to sell any of their small boats or gear such as paddles or life jackets\, with an encouraged donation to CFRW of 10% of your sale. If you’re interested in doing so\, send an email to Audrey at audrey@cfrw.us to arrange it. \nSome other local community groups will also be on-site\, and UNCW POP and Bootscrap will be hosting a large cleanup competition based out of Waterline starting at 10am. DESCRIPTION:We hope that you can attend our first ever State of the River form! This event is free and open to all and vegetarian/vegan breakfast and lunch will be provided. \nSpace is limited! DESCRIPTION:Chemours has been running ads trying to convince us that they’re ‘Good Neighbors.’ We think that contaminating the drinking water for 510\,000 people (and counting) is not neighborly. The neighborly thing to do would be to shut the plant down. BUT\, we have found out that Chemours is planning the opposite. \nThey’re planning to EXPAND manufacturing at the Fayetteville Works site.  \nThe consent order (put in place after we sued them) requires they hold TWO public meetings on this – one for impacted communities near the facility and one near impacted downstream communities. \nThe meeting for impacted communities near the facility will be held at Bladen Community College on Tuesday\, September 20\, 2022\, from 5 pm – 7 pm. \nChemours Plant Manager Dawn Hughes said\, “We’re proud of the role we play… and we’re eager to explain the plans for our future with our neighbors.” \nThese are “open houses” and Hughes stated in an announcement that they “…plan to communicate [how these expansions] will make a positive impact across our community.” \nThey will not be providing an opportunity for public comment. \nCFRW wants to shift that agenda.  \nWill you commit to showing up at Bladen Community College\, September 20\, 5-7 pm?  \nSign up today to get upcoming emails providing more details on this event. \nIf you are interested in attending the meeting for impacted downstream communities\, held at the Leland Cultural Arts Center on Wednesday\, September 21st from 5-7pm\, click here.

That night\, FlyTrap will generously donate $1 per pint of a selected beer to CFRW\, Wheelz Pizza will fire up their oven to sling some pies\, and our friends the Smoky Dunes will provide the vibes!\n\nWe will also hold a raffle featuring items from local businesses including Great Outdoor Provision Company\, Seabird\, Luna Caffe\, Gravity Records\, and more!\n\nThe Clean Water Act was a first-of-its-kind environmental federal legislation that came about during the birth of the American environmentalism movement\, along with the Clean Air Act\, the Endangered Species Act\, and the Environmental Protection Agency. It established precedent-setting pollution standards and provides legal standing to citizens allowing them to advocate directly on behalf of their waterways.\n\nTo date\, it has made meaningful strides in cleaning American waterways and helped us achieve significant restoration\, protection\, and cleanup of severe pollution problems. Unfortunately\, there has been an erosion of the Act’s strength and it has never been fully implemented and enforced as Congress intended.\n\nJoin us to celebrate the historic wins of the Clean Water Act to sustain us for the fight ahead!

The first was Community Health and Environmental Reawakening (CHER) in which she served as a community organizer working with communities dealing with waste from industrial hog operations. In this position\, she worked with the late Dr. Steve Wing\, a founding member of NCEJN and Associate Professor at UNC Gillngs School of Public Health\, and was supervised by Gary Grant\, Executive Director of Concerned Citizens of Tillery. She has co-authored publications with Dr. Wing regarding community based participatory research (most recently in the New Solutions Health Journal). She also serves on the NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Secretary’s Environmental Justice & Equity Advisory Board. \nKemp Burdette is the Cape Fear Riverkeeper and he works to protect and improve the water quality of the Lower Cape Fear River. He is a Wilmington native who grew up exploring the waterways and swamps that make our area so special. Kemp has lived and traveled around the world as a US Navy search and rescue swimmer\, a Fulbright Scholar\, and a Peace Corps volunteer. At home and abroad Kemp has always been interested in the way humans interact with their environment.His academic background is in geology and history\, graduating from UNCW magna cum laude with honors\, and he holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA)\, also from UNCW. He also holds a certificate in nonprofit management from Duke University. \nShawn Bannon is an award-winning filmmaker whose films have screened at the Sundance Film Festival\, AFI FEST\, Hot Docs\, and they’ve been featured on The Atlantic\, Forbes\, and BBC America. His short films\, Hurricane Heroes\, Bloody Barbara and A Ghost Story – 10 Pages\, have all been selected for Vimeo Staff Picks. His recent film The Green Knight Documentary was made for A24 and premiered on iTunes. DESCRIPTION:Click here for tickets! \nCome explore Greenfield Lake “after hours” as we embark on a golden hour guided tour by paddleboat in celebration of Cape Fear Creek Week. We will wind through a secluded cove\, offering sightings of cypresses\, fish\, reptiles\, and roosting birds. Along the way\, we will learn about algal blooms\, spillways\, and watersheds—and how protecting the water quality of this hidden urban gem helps protect the Cape Fear River Basin as a whole. \nOne registration per paddleboat\, please list all passengers (including the registrant) in your registration.
